There has been a lot of hype for this indie film, especially since most of the Kannada film industry’s leading ladies spoke about how the trailer made an impact. Shuddhi, made by debutant Adarsh H Eshwarappa, is a film that deals with a lot of sensitive issues affecting women. To talk about the story and plot would be taking away credit from the good screenplay woven by the maker. The film boasts of good cinematography and background score. There are many moments that remain in one’s mind long after the film is done. Watch this film to appreciate a bold attempt.

One of the few new-age Kannada films that explore topics that require immediate attention and action, Shuddhi has been inspired by the horrendous rape incident in Delhi in 2012. The editing, perhaps, could have been tighter; a slight lag in the pace of the film, especially at the beginning as the film builds up the plot. Another plus is the language — made in Kannada and English, the film is also subtitled, making it ideal for those who don’t understand the local language. Having said that, Kannada subtitles for those who don’t know English might help the film to reach a wider audience.

Debutant Adarsh H Eshwarappa has done what few men dare to do, to slip out of their skin and into a woman’s. Shuddhi stresses that if you repress people beyond tolerable limits, they fight back with raw courage born out of desperation. In Shuddhi, such women reclaim control with effective countermeasures, although the narrative, at times, is not justified.  Shuddhi is a good attempt with Adarsh trying a cinematic treatment to real issues plaguing women. It is worth one watch but the revenge drama leaves a lot to desired.

It could have easily been just another crime thriller. Yet, its proximity to the real malady that exists amongst a few men in society who treat women badly, makes Shuddhi a meaningful watch. The plot is simple but complex. It revolves around three women, who are fighting for a common cause. It is certainly not a movie that just sends a strong message, it becomes a part of the movement. So, be a part it, which might empower us better to protect the female gender.
