Badrinath Ki Dulhania Reviews

Despite a share of dull moments, Khaitan does manage to give some tropes refreshing spins and does well by emphasising on the significance of respect in a relationship. He doesn’t shy away from highlighting Badri’s and Vaidehi’s imperfections. The biggest takeaway from Badrinath is that a woman leads the way and saves the day. She alters the hero’s mindset and makes him a more considerate man. A better title would have been Vaidehi Ka Dulha.

Bhatt tries to make up for what the screenplay fails to bring out with her dialogues and pauses. She emerges as a confident woman who chooses respect over love. It could also be the most convenient way out. The boy will follow a patriarchal curve and change only after falling in love. The onus to change him rests on the girl’s shoulders. It’s not an automatic process for Bollywood yet.On second thoughts, it works in favour of the film because of Dhawan and Bhatt’s sparkling chemistry. This film may not offer a substantial take on any cause, but it is one of the many that take the debate forward. Being mainstream will only help it.

Like Som, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is not what it appears to be. It is sad to see an acclaimed, seemingly thinking actress like Alia Bhatt lend herself to the games this film plays. PS: The credits list Bhatt after Dhawan, although they have equally important and substantial roles in the film. Just saying.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania turns everything else in sight into picture-postcard images. Jhansi doesn’t look like Jhansi and Kota doesn’t look like Kota. Even the accent that the leads adopt is rather dodgy and disinfected. Why would a Jhansi boy and a Kota girl embrace the same diction? If that’s love, it doesn’t make sense. Both entities are given heightened play in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. As for the film itself, it runs into an air-pocket of mediocrity and never finds its way out of it. Hop aboard only if you have no option.

The post-interval proceedings are marred by a huge contrivance, and turn into a bit of a meander. And there are some portions which are bunged in as set-pieces, instead of moving organic parts. A couple of times, the film’s let’s hear-it-for-the-ladies comes off as a simplistic flourish. But overall, the film works as a flavoursome romance with a pair which grows into each other, and with each other.

The runtime doesn’t help either. This is a story with an obvious climax, so sitting through two and a half hours to find out what you already know might get uncomfortable. But the breezy vibe of the movie and back-to-back hilarious lines should get you through it.The beautiful effortlessness of their onscreen companionship plasters a grin on your face. Dhawan as Badri is adorable; you instantly take to him. He even pulls off some high-drama scenes impressively. Bhatt, unsurprisingly, gives it her all, and her sincerity comes through. But her accent, casually swinging between Juhu and Jhansi, is bothersome at times. RSVP Yes to this wedding; it’s grand, with good music, great people and delicious food for thought.

‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ turns out to be a complete entertainer. Keeping in mind the Holi spirit and festivities, the movie not only brings smiles on your faces but also forces you to question meaningless traditions and other social evils. In the flick, Varun Dhawan shines as an innocent lover while Alia makes an impact with her firm attitude. The film also carries the fragrance of Indian small towns in its heart.

The climax seems slightly over dramatic.Badrinath Ki Dulhania‘s rom-com with a message format is likable. Alia-Varun once again show, they are the new-age Raj-Simran.

The first half of the film moves at a brisk pace, while the second half gets bogged down by an overly long stretch about Vaidehi’s profession as an air hostess. We are given a crash course on what it takes to be a flight attendant and it isn’t always riveting. While the comical twists put a smile on your face, a stray joke about homosexuals was unwarranted and grating. But just like a big fat Indian wedding, there’s a bit of colour, dance, music and loads of drama thrown into Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Take the plunge with Dhawan and Bhatt. Their combined acting skills and comic timing will make it an enjoyable affair.
