Adhe Kangal Movie Review
Rating :- 3.5/5 Reviewed by: M Suganth Site: TimesofIndia
What’s most impressive about Adhe Kangal is how it treats its two female leads. They aren’t just romantic interests but have a larger role to play. Even the regular comic sidekick role is written as something integral to the plot, and Balasaravanan gives this role the right amount of seriousness and light-heartedness it deserves. As far as debut efforts go, Adhe Kangal lacks the dazzle of the recent Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru (in fact, this film is visually indistinct), but there is a quiet assuredness in the filmmaking, especially in the second half, that gives us hope for Rohin Venkatesan’s next outing.

Things begin to look up in the second half, even if the big reveal is seen from a mile away. But the villain’s character makes things slightly interesting. It’s easily the best-written of the bunch, and the others end up looking completely colourless in comparison. Adhe Kangal belongs to Sshivada. She’s asked to deliver a few too many enigmatic smiles, but she pulls the film together. The problem with Adhe Kangal is that it rarely transcends the “interesting on paper” stage. There’s a great story, but the screenplay isn’t tight — and the detours into duets and Bala Saravanan’s comedy, with Mickey Mouse music, don’t help. The dialogue is too direct, with little flavour. And for a thriller, there’s very little mood, atmosphere.

The biggest strength of Adhe Kangal is that the director is very clear in his execution. Though the story takes place in small towns and the crime he has handled is quite topical. Introducing humour in a serious crime thriller has always worked and in here, Rohin has achieved it through Balasaravanan. The second half moves swiftly and is engaging than the first half.Technically too the film is quite good, the glossy cinematography of Ravivarman gives an ad film feel while Ghibran background score is a big plus. Overall, Adhe Kangal is a satisfying watch this weekend.
